Most parents are anxious for their children to do well in school. They forget that many very successful adults never did well in school. There are people with doctorates who were essentially at the bottom of their classes in school. And CEOs of start-ups who bloomed late in life.

The realization that children develop at different rates and in different fields has been around for ages. But parents in their bid to ensure the best for their children put this fact aside to hothouse their kids. Sometimes, this ‘works’. Such children’s impressive speech and general knowledge give their parents much pride. Often it creates a lot of tension. Amy Chua, the Tiger Mum, achieved some success with her daughters with her very strict child-rearing. There is also the tragedy of the Oxford math whizz who became a prostitute in protest of her father’s methods. It clearly caused her loss of self-esteem. (Happily, she is now a social worker.)

We ask parents to re-think their expectations. As Amy Chua said, you must balance your expectations with your unconditional love for them. Don’t let them feel that you only love them IF they do well.

Work with us to do what’s best for your children.
